The one where Death or Glory 2 is close...

Hello! It's been a while since I've posted and I've not been dormant! I have been gathering Chaosy goodness ready to unleash on an unsuspecting victim... Before I do that, I need to get on to my list for Death or Glory!

I have signed up for a tournament (Death or Glory if you didn't know) in Woking with some real big name players of the UK tournament scene. In truth... I'm properly bricking it! I know what to expect from a tournament but I don't know what to expect from this one. I've seen links on YouTube about the previous tourney with mass drinking games in the evening, the problem is that I'm staying over a mates house 40 minutes away... So I think that I'll have to pass on those! The plus side to that is at least on the 2nd day I may finish in the top half of the table! That would be partly due to the fact half of the table didn't turn up! However I get there...I'd be happy!

Now...on to list submission!

I have toyed with different combinations of lists from the most bizzare (GK/Eldar, GK/Necrons, DE/CSM) to some fairly well established lists (DE/Eldar, CSM/Daemons, CSM, GK). I was toying with taking my CSM/Daemon list with 3 Maulerfiends, 3 Heldrakes and a Soulgrinder *cough* powergamingwanker *cough* but I'm missing one thing... my cultists ("Oh No! Not the cultists!"). They are actually in Plymouth! So even if I could drybrush the shit out of all my models I would be missing the most vital 50 points of my army :-/! Well, I'd be missing a troop choice! And to be fair, with the level I've painted the last few CSM models, I don't want to ruin it so I'm looking to take that list to War of the Roses. Provided I can get it painted in time, which shouldn't be too hard due to the fact I've got 7 massive beasts and a few troops!

For this tourney, I've gone back to my roots... I've gone back to one of my first loves of 40k... Sisters of Battle. Not just love as in orgasm but love as in quite liking the models! So when the tissues out of the way and the hands have been wiped I went on to writing my list! The problem I've got is that I've got a selection of Sisters but as you may be aware... they're not that powerful! I do like them as a starting list and I can get strong/cheap troops out of them and spam the heavy support because lets be honest, there isn't really any other option! They do however need to be allied with something... So I tried two different combos. I went to try my original allied combo - Sisters/GK and I experimented with a few different combos in previous lists, finally I settled on this one:

Primary Detachment: Sisters of Battle / Adeptus Sororitas

HQ
Celetine [135]: 135

Troop
Sister Squad [60] 5 additional Sisters [60] 2 Meltaguns [20] Simulacrum Imperialis [10] Condemnor Boltgun [10]: 160

Sister Squad [60] 5 additional Sisters [60] 2 Meltaguns [20] Simulacrum Imperialis [10] Condemnor Boltgun [10]: 160

Heavy Support
Exorcist [125] Dozer Blade [5]: 130

Exorcist [125] Dozer Blade [5]: 130

Exorcist [125] Dozer Blade [5]: 130

Allied Detachment: Space Marines

Allied HQ
Chief Librarian Tigurius [165]: 165

Allied Troop
Scout Squad [55] 5 Camo Cloaks [10] 5 Sniper Rifles [5]: 70

Allied Heavy Support
Centurion Devastator Squad [190] 3 Grav Cannons and Grav Amps [60] Omniscope [10]: 260

Dedicated Transport
Land Raider Redeemer [240] Multimelta [10]: 250

Codex: Inquisition DetachmentHQ
Inquisitor Cotez [100]: 100

Army Total: 1850

So, no anti air really, but I figured with Tigger in a centurion unit then what does it matter?! I can reroll and smash a vehicle to shit rather than have something else that can get shot down!

There we go! A quick post to tell you how non-gamey this list is! I do expect to get decimated but I've not really used sisters in a competitive atmosphere (with the greatest respect to my friends and gamers) where they can be pushed to their limits, i.e Death!
I wrote another list (with models I don't own!) which would be my ideal Sisters with Allies list! It is, of course, with the IG! Not just for the fact I can rain down cheap troops and they are Battle Brothers or Sisters... but they have the ability to get some of the best flyers in the game in cheap squadrons! This would enable me to have 3 Vendettas as one FA slot... Oh yes!
So the list would look like this:

Primary Detachment: Sisters of Battle / Adeptus Sororitas

HQ
Celetine [135]: 135

Troop
Sister Squad [60] 5 additional Sisters [60] 2 Meltaguns [20] Simulacrum Imperialis [10] Condemnor Boltgun [10]: 160

Allied Detachment: Imperial Guard

Allied HQ
Company Command Squad [50] Master of Ordnance [30]: 80

Allied Troop
Veteran Squad [70] 3 Meltaguns [30]: 100

Allied Fast Attack
3 Vendetta Gunship Squadron [390] 3 Heavy Bolters [30]: 420

Allied Heavy Support
Manticore [160]: 160

Codex: Inquisition DetachmentHQ
Inquisitor Cotez [100]: 100

Army Total: 1850

You've heard of Heldrake city...well...Vendetta Town! Yeah okay, it was a shit attempt! My bad! Sorry!

Before I go to the tournament I will be playing against Nath (@NinjaNathUK). Now, if you remember Nath used a Raptor against me last time and it was DEADLY! Well... he's been giving it the big guns (quite literally) on Twitter and I'll be interested to see his concoction of a list! I've looked at a previous 1500 list he wrote for October ToS and there is some really nasty stuff! Can't wait to see what's happening with that! I will post my list of what I am using for Friday on here during next week! I can hear you screaming at the screen going "You Twat! Play your DoG list!" And, you have a point. However, it's not valid and I don't care! I want to be well versed in a list and the DoG was a spur of a moment thing as I was on the reserve list and I couldn't really get much of a varied force together! I will be however play test lists for WotR in May!

I'll of course keep you informed of the tournament next week!

Thanks for reading! I'll see you soon!

The one where I play My Little Pony... True Story!

So I said in my previous post that I was going to play My Little Pony (MLP) CCG. A bit of background about this; I was in an independent retailer when I saw this magical pile of rainbow spew! I thought it was slightly quirky.

So the game dynamic is this:
You have a main character (also known as a Mane Character...get it!) with a limit in the 'Home Zone' to how many ponies you can have. The idea is that you solve problems in the centre using cards either in your hand or on the table. For each problem solved you earn a certain amount of Victory Points (VP). Each turn you get a set of action points dependent on how many victory points a player has. The action points are used to play ponies, troublemakers (who make problems harder for an opponent to solve so you can solve it first and gain more points), resource or event cards.

A fairly easy set up. As you can see, I have the really manly Applejack pony as my Mane character. The Mane character has the chance to flip over to a boosted character with more abilities which help influence the game.

Here you can see the game in more or less full flow. To win, you have to get 15 victory points. I can hear you ask: how do you find action points/victory points ratio? Well, fairly simply, you get a handy card in your starter deck with it!

There are 6 main (or should that be Mane) characters within the game all of which have different abilities to do different things within the game. For example; move characters around from problem to problem for a reduced rate.

Yes, this is based on the Star Trek game of old where you had to solve problems to earn VP.

Now, I've watched a few videos on YouTube because it's the manly thing to do and I've seen a few things on deck building and things to look out for. So I've changed the decks around which now give one a better balance than the other, however, I have ordered the last two Mane Characters that I missing, so that will open up more combos!

Cuteness aside, the game has a great dynamic which will be hard to master but is fairly simple to grasp. (Where have you heard that before!) It provides an interesting take on CCG but one which isn't a kill kill one...i.e - MTG!

ANYWAY, in less manlier news -
Mr. Nigel Barlett (@NigelSBartlett) has added to my Malifaux crew with this spectacular figure...
Well, there is nothing more I can say! It speaks for itself!

Next, do you remember that I said my Mrs had put a spending embargo on and that I may purchase things if I don't tell her? Yes? No? Well... I may have broken the no spending thing but I haven't told her! I've been scouring e-bay for deals on figures so that I can gain a small army. When I say small army... This is my force that I've collected from e-bay/purchased:
3 Helldrakes, 3 Maulerfiends, 30 Plaguebearers, Herald of Nurgle, 20 CSMs. All of this for a grand total of: £240! When you consider my army list that I'm collecting costs £420, I think it's a great deal! Yes, that's what I'm telling myself and that's what I'm sticking to! Okay! Good! So over the next few days I will eagerly await my models. For now, here is what I've done since I last posted:

I have based the Maulerfiend now, but I still need to add detail to the base! It looks very bare.
And I've done a total of 5 CSMs without basing!
Can't wait for the rest to arrive and I will post the results and the whole army on here!
I think I need a bastion, so if anyone has one knocking around... please let me know!

Thanks for reading. I'll see you soon!

The one where I run a tournament...

Those of you following my recent tweet pattern and blog posts will know that I've had a spot of bother with a competitor who was frustrated at the way the list build worked within the tournament. Reflecting on this, between myself and the LGS, we didn't confer on what can/can't be included until about 24 hours before the event! I can understand the frustration of the competitor involved, however what was said is inexcusable. I can confirm that this person was a keyboard warrior who has no substance behind his idle threat! I do admit that it didn't help that when I waded in I read the original rule pack wrong so I posted something completely different to what was actually being said! Having discussed the list build with the LGS, we have agreed that it should be done the way I read it as next time! (Not saying I'm always right...but well, you know!) Instead of using one FOC where each person takes 750 pts, which is open to abuse of only taking 1 HQ and 2 troops between both players, it has been decided that next time we do this event it will be 1 HQ per person, which fills in the FOC HQ choice and then 2 troops each - 4 of the 6 slots for troops and then fill the lists out as they please!
I can confirm that the keyboard warrior was deeply apologetic for the comments he made, especially when he saw he was threatening to hit a 16 stone, 6'4" man with a ghetto booty! So all's well!

On to the tournament! We had 10 teams which was absolutely fantastic! The way we would score this is to do point differential for each round, which meant that players who wanted a chance to win would have to play either conservatively or aim to smash opponents off the table! For example: Team A win 9 - 6 in the first game, so they are on +3 and team B are on -3. This would mean rankings and opponent match ups are easier to calculate. The problem that I've experienced in the past is if I have won a round but only won by 1VP and another player wins by 15VP, on a score sheet a TO will only see a win! So I could end up playing someone who will completely blow me off the table instead of a match up which would lead to a close and exciting game for both parties! In this tournament we had a real mix of players; some who have just started, some who have picked it up to play doubles after an absence and some who play in the GT... Before I even start can you guess who is going to win? Spoiler Alert... It's not who you think!

So, 10 teams, 3 rounds (Purge the Alien/Dawn of War, Big Guns Never Tire/Vanguard Strike, The Scouring/Hammer and Anvil). Each round lasts 2 hours including set up and pack up time! Now, not every game lasted for the full 2 hours and we did manage to finish earlier than planned!

What I'm going to do if run down the tourney lists (without points) to give you an idea of what we dealing with! I have written the lists as it would be on 1 FOC but for some of them you can guess what goes with what!

Leman Russ w/Lascannon, Camo netting

So, there are the lists... There is an interesting mix and some which are not the most likely of combos you'd expect! The whole day was a real success with a few rule disputes and one rule I didn't know but is totally awesome! The one rule dispute which stood out for me was the misconception that you can come on with a Stormraven (I'll let you guess which list that is) from the oppo board edge and assault on the same turn! Well, we of course know that this isn't the case and as soon as that was sorted out...no problems!
What I didn't realize was if you go to ground in area terrain you add +2 to your cover save not +1! WOW! So that makes it a +3 cover save instead of a +4! Awesome! I know now that I have a back up if I have to place an objective nearly out in the open! Every day's a school day!

The tournament went to-and-fro with teams taking points off each other! One list which will be of no surprise to you will be the Tau list with Farsight does particularly well. In fact, with the differential system in the first game they come up against the Belial's revenge. Bear in mind that there is 2 hours for a round, this game was over in under an hour... in the 3rd turn. On reflection, this random first match up wasn't the greatest success. The farsight list won 11-0! Another big win was the Missing my Midgets against the Where did all the calculators go; 13-2. So a difference of 11 too! It was inevitable that these two giants would play each other in the 2nd round. Other scores from the round:
Kelly and Lee 5 - 476 9
WAAAGH 5 - The Metal 5
Emperor's Finest 6 - Ginger Ninjas 7

A few close results! The challenge is to let everyone play games which would give them a test of their ability but also won't be a total whitewash! So the match ups look like this:
Where did all the calculators go 9 - Belial's Revenge 0
Missing my Midgets 0 - News Team 16
Kelly and Lee 16 - The Metal 3
WAAAGH 4 - Emperor's Finest 3
Ginger Ninjas 1 - 476 19
Well... close... maybe in 1 game! The thing with some of the games is, you hold 2 objectives and things run away from you! Now this put it all into the mix. Yes, the tournament tau team (try saying that drunk) we winning on a differential with 27 points! The nearest contenders were 476 with 22. Everyone else was in neg numbers. Belial's Revenge on -20 and Ginger Ninjas on -18!

During this round I promised a regular down the store that I'd play Warmahordes High Command Card Game. I was a bit dubious about playing, because after all, I don't need another game to be investing in! After playing however, the game mechanics work quite similarly to My Little Pony (more on that later... yes, it is so manly!) TCG. You have to spend resources to buy creatures and put them in locations to earn VPs! The player who gets the most VPs win! Simples! You choose your faction, just like the game and your Warcaster(s)! Yes, you need 3 Warcasters to build your deck.

I did enjoy the game and it was challenging! An interesting dymanic that you have to pay for beasts before you can have them in your hand and use them on locations.

Now it is approaching the final round... And it looked like the win was in the bag for the fluffy Tau list. So fluffy that kittens would be jealous! So fluffy that pillows all over the world seem like stone. So fluffy... yeah okay, you get the idea and I've run out of ideas of fluffyness comparisons! What you need to know is that it was the fluffiest list... at a GT!

The match ups would pit the Tau against the CSM build. This caused great excitement all around...for the Tau players, not anyone else. The mission, The Scouring, would be something fairly testing and I had a sneaking suspicion that something unexpected could happen! Well, it very nearly did! Into turn 3 and 2 Vindis were still left and bearing down on the broadsides and riptides. That was, until the riptides popped out and eventually bust both Vindis!
Fear not though! The CSM players held high scoring objectives and their plan for the next two turns would be to just hold those two objectives and nick the game! This very nearly happened! The only thing stopping them... The Heldrake got shot down giving a VP to the Tau! The game ended with a 7-7 draw! Originally both sets of players thought the CSMs had won...until they pointed it up at the end! Nevertheless, this game was by far the closest the Tau came to defeat and it was thrilling to watch!
In other news, Kelly and Lee's Wraith Wing went toe-to-toe with 10 Termies and Cotez... I should tell you before I write about this combat that I visited WAAAGH's first two games both on Turn 1 and 3 in the past two games and in turn 1 there was a full unit of termies, in turn 3 there was just Cotez...both times! Now, I was really surprised that in an army with so many shots that the termies did not bite the dust. Instead a tactical error placed the termies up against the 5 wraith star with the destroyer lord. I think the phrase is...Dead! The whole unit of Wraiths destroyed in the first round of combat along with the lord! Not a great start for 1st turn! It was only then the rest of the cron force decided it wanted to smash the shit out of the termies!

One thing I do want to point out is this...

Yes, cron cowboys! Don't you just know it!

The final round panned out like this:
476 7 - News Team 7
Where did all the calculators go? 4 - Emperor's Finest 4
Missing my Midgets 15 - The Metal 0
Belial's Revenge 9 - Ginger Ninjas 3
Kelly and Lee 6 - WAAAGH 8

All in all a very worthwhile and exciting tournament. I know for some the match ups didn't suit them or the games they played they got tabled because of the lists but that's tournament play! I hope everyone had a good day!
The winners of the tournament got £25 in GW credit, 2nd place £15, 3rd place £10 and the losers were suggested that they play a different game, so were given a booster of My Little Pony each! This actually worked out better for the losers as you might think! Both the lads were very interested to play the game, so it was win-win! The comment one of the lads used was "I'm glad we got tabled every round!" So it's not all bad!

The final standings looked like this:
News Team +27
476 +22
Missing my midgets +10
Kelly and Lee +7
WAAAGH GITSNIK +3
Emperor's Finest -2
Where did all the calculators go? -2
Belial's Revenge -11
Ginger Ninjas -24
The Metal -28

A fantastic tournament with a great group of people. The comments on FB aside it was a truly worthwhile days gaming which brought everyone together to share ideas! Really enjoyed it and hope I can run one again soon!

Just because that is what you ALWAYS see on a 40k battlefield... what the Emperor will do in the Warp! Only included on this table because the wall you can see in the foreground in suspiciously like the one used in Jurrasic Park! Not like the movie replica but you get the jist! All we're missing are the cars, but I would think due to their previous track record, they're off the board broken down!

Now, I am off to play the manliest card game I know... My Little Pony! I will be writing a post on how manly I am! If you're lucky, I'll even include photos of in game play! In your heads right now you've just gone "OoOoOoOoOh!" Don't deny it...I know you did!

The one where I reply to idle threats...

So simply this is the reply to my conundrum earlier tonight. Just a refresher, there was a clash about rules for the tourney which will happen today (Saturday). The 1500pts 40k doubles tourney happening at my LGS suffered some rules confusion. So, after a friendly member of the store's community said they'll hit me if the ruling on points changes, I have replied with this:

It's a game of toy soldiers... Brett has sorted the rules out... Job done! Threats like that have no place here, certainly to people who are giving up their time trying to help out and bring players together for a friendly tourney. mistakes and clashes will be made. There is always going to be teething problems with things which hasn't been done before. No one is forcing you to play in this event. I certainly don't appreciate threats like that.

So, that's just an update on my blog! I have left the group on Facebook now and I have a feeling I will need to find another gaming store!

Thanks for reading, I'll see you soon!

The one where I kitbash...

So the dust has settled, the Dark Eldar have been put away in a temper tantrum and I'm bored on half term!
I've had a few things have been on my mind over the past few days and I will get to the kitbashing after I've talked through a few other things!

Tomorrow (or by the time you're reading this - today), I will be assisting/completely running a 40k doubles tournament! Now this tournament has caused some controversy over the last few hours on Facebook.
I'm running the tournament at my LGS, 1500 pts 40k Doubles. The idea is that each player brings 750pts to reach the total. Using the 3-1-0 system we will find a winner over 3 rounds...or as close to a winner as possible. Fairly straightforward you'd think but the rules surrounding the tournament from the GW site are apparently hard to grasp! One FOC which the players build from. Simple yes? Well, I read it as you have to have 1 HQ and 2 troops each, which would go along with the FOC anyway and guaranteed 4 troop units. This would enable everyone to fill out the rest of the slots as they wish. The ruling that has been given from the LGS is that the FOC can be filled by just 1 HQ if they wish from 1 player and then fill the FOC as they see fit, both using 750pts.
Now, either way is fine by me! The lack of communication is my fault, as I didn't clarify before hand, however this has brought criticism on FB from some players! One has even ended a post with the line: "if  I come in tomorrow and find that you've changed it again you are going to get hit". Now, we got the clarification of the one FOC I would have thought this would be fairly easy to comprehend... Clearly not! As of yet, I haven't replied to this and I am debating whether or not to turn up tomorrow as a mark of protest. Over the year, since the LGS has opened, they have helped me by introducing me to Malifaux, giving me painting tips and helping me with my all round hobbying needs. This is the closest LGS to me which has a gaming area and an abundant supply of merchandise to tempt my interest! Now, I come under flack all the time, not normally from the gaming community, and it usually doesn't bother me but something you do for free, something you give time up for and you come under this type of abuse is just not on. I know what you're thinking; You're overreacting, you can't tell a persons tone from the internet... well... not strictly true. So this leaves me in a difficult place at the moment because I'm not sure I want to go and run something at that store with those type of people. At the moment, it throws into debate whether I want to continue gaming down there... More on that in another post!

Rant over... and breathe...

So, those of you on Twitter today (or yesterday) may have seen my progress with my not so secret secret project! The idea is to have two forces for 40k and one for fantasy, although at the moment it is hard to decide what fantasy army to ditch! At the moment, my not so secret project is steadily rolling along, gathering models from a range of sources. Now, I know what you think - I'm not allowed to spend money! And you're quite right, I'm not allowed to spend money! But I'm half term and the Mrs can't see what I purchase and bring back to the house to build! I've used the line this week: "This? I found it in the garage!" I am however being a bit more astute about how I'm getting my models. I don't mean I go all ninja on your asses and tuck n roll into the house with new models. I mean, shop on ebay for some things which are already built and will be cheaper than normal. Those who know me know that I go through armies at an alarming rate, although I have been a lot better in the past few years than I have been! There was a stage where I'd get through armies on average, once a month. Now, I  actually keep armies... for some time!!! It's true!
So, with the limited shoestring/sneaky bastard restriction I have to be a bit clever about my models! Well today, in my mass boredom, I managed to kitbash a few models together!
I've got a unit of 3 obliterators (not my proudest kitbash but useable non-the-less), A warpsmith and 2 Chaos Lords. I've modelled one lord as the primary lord in my list with a power axe and a burning brand!

I wanted to give my army a feel of rust on the armour and oxidisation... now GW have handily made a paint which looks like oxidising metal and a coat of rust over the top I think they'll be table top standard in no time! I really want to take my time on this paint job and no rush it! Ideally, I'd like them ready for tournament play, but I have a feeling I won't be able to acquire the models in time for Death or Glory (2 weeks), so it'll be Grey Knights!

I'm waiting for a few eBay items to come in (hopefully) and then I'll be more or less sorted! I've managed to get a Soulgrinder for £15.00! bargain!!! At some point I'll look for obliterators, but I have no immediate rush for them as I don't know if I'll use them in my list!

Oh! Before I go, some people on Twitter (okay no-one, but I thought I'd share) have been asking me where I got these Ultra-Cool cards from for this totally awesome and really manly CCG...

Well, these My Little Pony TCG cards are from another LGS which specialises in the weird and wonderful! Yes, they stock some Warhammer but no Malifaux. They do stock loads of other games which are slightly baffling to me so I haven't really explored them. This game works the same way the old Star Trek CCG did. You have mission cards or 'problems' which need to be solved and you earn points. The idea, unlike MTG or Pokémon, is to collect points before the end of the game. I've just opened my pack and got the rulebook out! I think my Sunday will be having a look at these and see how it works! Yes...it is TOTALLY MANLY and not girly at all... end of discussion! *Picks up handbag and walks away*

Only a short post tonight, but something I wanted to share with you none-the-less. Hope you've enjoyed reading. I'll put my progress up of these soon!

I'll see you soon!
